Happy New Year

I was spending New Year's Eve as usual. My family was watching "Kohaku Utagassen" (NHK's annual year-end grand song festival) in the living room. And I was reading a paperback there.

I dropped interest in the program a long time ago. But I watch it with family reading something. I'm very grateful to be here and enjoy New Year's Eve in peace.

The start of a new year gives me a feeling of hope. I want to make a breakthrough this year.

Hi, long time no see. I've just eaten two pieces of Christmas cake. Do you have one yet?

I'm hooked on twitter in 2011. And this is the second posting in the year.

It's Christmas Eve. There are only seven days left this year. So I think I take a look back over the year.

The most exciting thing was baseball. My favorite team Dragons won two consecutive Central League pennants. The pennant race went as I expected. I was so excited. I checked game results every night. And manager Ochiai left the team. I regret that. I thank Ochiai for his dedication and performance.

The most impressive thing was the big earthquake and tsunami in Tohoku region on March 11. I didn't suffer any direct damage. But the disaster made me think about a lot. We are not sure what will happen. I have to get a grip and be tough.

In the market, I suffered from Europe debt crisis. It was so difficult to trade. But I never give up. I keep working so that I can toast myself with a good glass of wine.

I've been blessed with good health and family. I'm aware that I'm very lucky. Next year, I will live for the moment. And I want to improve my English and investing skills.

It is bad to waste money on investment. It is worse to miss a chance.

Investors expect a good return on their investment. It is interesting to speculate about it in the process. If you get it right, you are very very happy.

But somehow the market moves to my expectations when I don't watch it. I don't lose money. But I am really frustrated. Do you think so, don't you?

Anyway I don't give up hope. There is always a chance, tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow.

My PC was dead

My desktop was broken on Wednesday. It couldn't start up. I had used it for six years. I suppose it is possible to fix it. But I'll buy new one till the end of year.

Honestly, I use my cell phone more than PC after I bought a new phone and began Twitter. It is really useful.

Now I post a story on my blog with the phone for the first time. :)

Amazing performance! Date beat Sharapova

Kimiko Date Krumm, the wild card and the oldest player in the draw who turned 40 on Tuesday, advanced the third round of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

Date Krumm beat defending champion and former world No.1 Maria Sharapova 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round on Monday. And she celebrated her 40th birthday with a victory, 2-6, 6-0, 4-0, over Daniela Hantuchova in the second round on Tuesday.

Unfortunately, Date Krumm was defeated against French Open champion Francesca Schiavone 3-6, 3-6 on Wednesday.

I was really surprised and very moved by her great performance. I am so encouraged. Thank you, Kimiko! I will do my best here and now.

Ana Ivanovic advances to the second round of US Open

Ana Ivanovic beat Ekaterina Makarova (Russia) 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the US Open in New York on Monday.

It was Ana's first appearance since an ankle injury forced her to withdraw in Cincinnati three weeks ago. I have worried about her injury. But she seems to be all right.

Ana will meet Jie Zheng (China) in the second round on Wednesday. I believe she will advance to the third round.

The rainy season was over in a wide area from northern Kyushu to the east of the country, the Japan Meteorological Association said Saturday.

My room gets plenty of sun. So the air conditioner in my room becomes ineffective. Even worse, my PC gives off heat. Sunny afternoon is the worst. It's impossible to stay the room for me.

I went to the near library yesterday. I'm going to there this afternoon, too. And I expect to go to the cafe more often. This is my summer. :-D

Japan advances to World Cup's second round

What a surprise!

Japan routed Denmark with a 3-1 victory on Thursday and joined into the second round of the World Cup finals.

I didn't expect Japan to advance to the second round. But I thought Japan had a chance to reach the second round. Because Cameroon and Denmark seemed to be out of shape before the first round.

Japan was really lucky, I thought. Paraguay is Japan's next opponent. I think Japan has a chance to win.

I hope Japan will become cheerful with this win.

ZOE live show

I saw the ZOE live show at Fujigaoka station last Saturday. It was broadcast live on the FM station RADIO-i.

ZOE is a female singer from Shanghai. I often listen to her program on RADIO-i in my car on Thursday afternoon. She has a tender voice. I always listen to the program about five minutes. So I want to listen to her song to the full.

ZOE appeared in a bit sexy black dress. She is more beautiful in person than in the photo. She song about five songs from her album. It was a comfortable time. I was favorably impressed by her shy character. I will continue to listen to her program on Thursday afternoon.

Market crashed

The Dow Jones industrial average plummeted a nearly 1,000 points, its biggest intraday points drop ever, on Thursday afternoon.

I had a long position of the Australian dollar against the Japanese yen then. Suddenly the price dived below 79 yen!! I closed my position involuntarily. And it was a shock to find out that the price rebounded immediately.

According to the media, the slide, which in one 10-minute stretch knocked the index down nearly 700 points, may have been triggered by a trading error. And the effect of algorithmic trading is rumored to cause the market chaos.

If that is true, I want to punch the man who entered the error trade. But I feel frustrated not to be able to buy bottoms more than lose money.

Regulators offered little clarity, saying they would investigate what had happened. If the market tumble just like that, I am scared to buy stocks. I hope regulators will look closely into the cause and handle it.

Any way, why does not such a huge fluctuation happen in the bull market?

Unsteady basic policy and confusion

May has come. According to the media, Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama will visit Okinawa Prefecture on Tuesday to hold talks with Gov. Hirokazu Nakaima on the issue of where to relocate the US Futenma air base in Okinawa.

Hatoyama administration, however, show no sign of a settlement on the issue. I think Hatoyama administration lacks basic principle on national defense. So it goes wrong.

New small parties launched

Former Health, Labor and Welfare Minister Yoichi Masuzoe resigned Thursday from the Liberal Democratic Party and formed a new party Shinto Kaikaku Friday.

Four small parties, mainly made up of defectors from the LDP in a year. They are Yoshimi Watanabe's Your Party, Takeo Hiranuma's Tachiagare Nippon (Sunrise Party of Japan), Hiroshi Yamada's Nippon Soshinto and Masuzoe's Shinto Kaikaku. They all criticize the ruling Democratic Party of Japan and the LDP, and want to make a real change in Japanese politics.

I suppose they are serious and work hard for the future of Japan. I think, however, their act miss the point. The upsurge of small parties cause confusion and paralysis in Japan's politics unless they have solid policy and vision.

I think a crucial problem of Japan is to take short views. Japan has taken nearsighted response to troubles since the bubble economy burst. Japan needs to change the way of thinking. Japanese people should think more big and take a long view. Japan still has a chance, I think.

Matsui received long cherished ring

Hideki Matsui received his 2009 World Series ring from New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium. And Matsui was hailed by the Yankees and the crowd in the stadium. When Matsui batted for the first time, the crowd's standing ovation was laud and lingered, causing him to stop out of the batter's box and wave his red Angels helmet twice. "I was very deeply moved," Matsui said. "It's something I will remember forever, that moment."

I watched the scene on the MLB site. It was very very cool. I think Matsui really became a hero in New York.

Matsui started out great in the season. His new team Los Angeles Angels, however, made a poor performing as of now. I hope Matsui will lead the Angels as a cleanup hitter.

Hideki Matsui is the Los Angeles Angels' newcomer from New York.

Matsui drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth and added an eight-inning homer and steered the Angels to victory against the Minnesota Twins on Opening Day on Monday night.

I watched Matsui's home run on TV news. It was a really exciting shot.

Matsui took to the field on Thursday. And he smacked his second homer on Friday.

I can't take my eyes off of him in this season.

iPad debuts in US

Apple's iPad came to market in the US on Saturday.

I am really interested in the iPad. I think it is an epoch-making gadget. It is very useful for people who is unfamiliar with PC. And it has a potential to change publishing and education.

But I want to buy a new smartphone now, not an iPad. The iPad is really nice for personal entertainment. It is, however, a little big to carry around all the time. I want to use keyboards to make a document. I think I don't need the iPad now.

In Japan the iPad will be released late April. I want to try it out. If I get an extra profit in investment, I might take the iPad?!

Baseball season has begun

My favorite Chunichi Dragons had a fairly good start. Dragons has many new faces in the season. I hope they will contribute to the team.

By the way, I bought a can of beer. Japanese brewery Sapporo collaborates with Dragons. Sapporo has produced it since 1984. I have drunk it for the first time. It is delicious. The can designs of Dragons' mascot Doara in the 2010 version. It says, "Aim at the Japan champion!" I hope so.

Pin terminal or USB?

I bought a headset on Thursday to use it to study English. I took it which had terminal pins simply because it was cheap. Yesterday, I tried using it. Gosh! My PC has no microphone terminal pin. It was of no use. There is no choice. I bought a headset with USB terminal today.

I want a smartphone now. If I have one, I don't need to buy a new laptop soon. And smartphone is less expensive than laptop. NTT docomo's Xperia will come to market on April 1. It is interesting for me. I will get extra income in mid-April. I think I will take it.

I want to go to the movies after a long time

I have not gone to the movies for nearly a year. Because there were few movies I wanted to see. But I want to see several movies now.

They are "Hana no Ato" or "After the Flowers," "Up in the Air," "The Hurt Locker" and "Sherlock Holmes." I can't see all. Which should I see? Before that, when do I go to the movies? That's a problem.

Forbes magazine announces the 2010 Forbes list of the world's billionaires. The world's richest person is Mexican telecom tycoon Carlos Slim. Bill Gates is the No. 2 and Warren Buffett is the No. 3.

Slim is the first non-American to top the list since 1994. Gate's and Buffett's donations played a role in their decline to the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. However the rise of Slim reflects the increasing presence of developing nations.

I read the news in the Japan Times. I was impressed Slim's words. "Wealth must be seen a responsibility, not as a privilege. The responsibility is to create more wealth. It's like having an orchard; you have to give away the fruit, but not the trees."

I think how to use wealth is a very important matter. I want to be a man who worry about that.

Positive surprise happens when I have no position!?

Stocks Jumped Friday after US employment report showed fewer jobs were cut in February than expected. Major stock indexes climbed more than 1 percent, including the Dow Jones industrial average, which rose 122 points.

I've traded the Australian dollar against the yen. But I was on the sidelines on Friday. I think Aussie's daily chart turned bullish. I'll buy Aussie this week.

Meanwhile stock markets will still move within a range, I suppose.

Academy Award is held on Sunday

The Academy Award ceremony will be held in Hollywood on Sunday. There is a story predicting the Oscar winners in Time. I think I will read it tomorrow.

By the way Japan's Academy Award was held yesterday. I watched it on TV. Because my favorite actress was nominated for the best actress. Unfortunately, she didn't get the award. But she has successfully advanced her career. Her name is Haruka Ayase. I want to see her movie again.

Chile's earthquake, tsunami, rising Aussie

A massive magnitude-8.8 earthquake struck Chile early Saturday. The tsunami from the strong earthquake hit Japan Sunday. And the aftereffect made an impact in the currency market today.

I have pay attention to the Australian dollar lately. I reckoned Aussie would be flat Monday because RBA announces its policy rate Tuesday. But Aussie climbed against the yen. Chile's copper production will be down. So supply and demand of copper will be tight. And copper price rose. It was the reason why Aussie was up. I had no idea about it. I missed buying Aussie.

Anyway, the market is open tomorrow, too. Watch the movement of price and do my best!

My English immediate task

I browsed in the neighborhood bookstore this afternoon. I happened to find an interesting book about financial English. It is about finance and financial English for beginners. It seems useful. I purchased it.

I want to improve my English enough to write stories well. So I read a lot of stories everyday. But I have to improve pronunciation and vocabulary. That's the short-term task. I will use the book which I bought today and my English-Japanese dictionary. And I will practice English pronunciation earnestly.

Practice makes perfect. I'll try it!

I'm proud of you, Mao!

South Korea's Olympic favorite Kim Yu Na won the women's figure skating gold medal at the Vancouver Olympics on Thursday night. Japan's medal hopeful Mao Asada failed to grab the gold medal and finished the second.

Mao Asada landed a triple axel in her short program and two ones in her free skate. She had a high score. But it was a complete defeat against Kim. I think the difference was preparations for the Olympic Games during four years. Kim had a very good ones, I suppose.

I really regret that Mao missed the gold medal. Well, she did a very very good job. Because she had been in a terrible slump last year. I think she backed on track well.

Finishing up her long program, Mao was inconsolable as she broke down into tears in the interview area. I watched the scene on TV. I was really moved. It is very great to be able to throw oneself into work enough to break into tears. I want to be so. Thank you, Mao for wonderful performances!

Japanese exporters' threshold is 92.90 yen

Exporters said they can remain profitable as long as the yen trades at 92.90 per dollar or weaker, according to a survey released Friday by the Cabinet Office. The level is stronger than the 97.33 yen break-even point companies provided last year.

The dollar seems to be stronger against the yen because of expectation of US rate rise. But the higher price will not rise drastically, I suppose. It will be sideways trade after all. Honestly, I have no idea on currency movements now. I will wait and see what happens in the market on Monday.

DPJ government considers raising top income tax rate

The government will consider whether it should raise the maximum income tax rate at its Tax Commission, Finance Minister Naoto Kan said Friday. The maximum rate now stands at 40 percent, after being lowered gradually from 70 percent in 1986.

The Democratic Party of Japan has populist instincts. So it is natural that DPJ has such an idea like that.

I don't think, however, that is a good idea. Japan's fundamental problem is lack of economic growth. Japan must get economic growth back. I think Japan need relaxation of regulations and reform of taxation system now. Japan should attract money and ambitious people from all over the world.

I'm afraid DPJ will not adopt that kind of policies. I hope Japan will be an attractive state for investor and entrepreneur.

Wow, Ana Ivanovic featured in the 2010 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit magazine. I looked photos and a video in the Sports Illustrated web site. Ana is so beautiful and sexy. She is like a model. I love Ana even more.

Maria Sharapova also featured in the 2006 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. I have a copy of it. I have to get a copy of the 2010 Swimsuit issue, too.

Well, I hope Ivanovic will make her mark on the court next.

Vancouver Olympic begins

The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games have officially begun.

There is a seventeen-hour difference between Vancouver and Japan. So we can watch most competitions in the daytime.

Only one event I'm looking forward to watch is the women's figure skating. Mao Asada, Miki Ando and Akiko Suzuki will take part in the competition from Japan. I'll watch it on TV cheering them.

I should buy a new PC

Investors retreated from risk taking investment Thursday and Friday as the market fears over the fiscal problems of Greece, Portugal and Spain.

I met a kind of crash after a long time. I thought I had a good position after announcement of US unemployment rate last night. But I missed taking profit because of the computer problem. And I couldn't trade well.

My speculation was really good. I was very disappointed. I have to refresh my feelings and do my best on Monday. Well, I'll check over news on G7. Better luck next time.

Serena, Federer win Aussie again

Serena Williams defeated Justine Henin 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at the final of Australian Open on Saturday. On the men's side, Roger Federer won the title against Andy Murray with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 victory on Sunday.

After all, top seeded players grabbed the title on both sides. I regret Ana Ivanovic and Maria Sharapova couldn't show their ability. I believe they will get better gradually.

By the way, Ivanovic's home page will be renewed next week. That's something to look forward to.

The dollar and the yen rise as China curbs bank lending and S&P cuts Japan's rating outlook.

Barack Obama will deliver his first State of the Union address on Wednesday. FOMC and the announcement of US 4Q '09 GDP are scheduled later in the week. The currency market was relatively calm yesterday.

So I thought the market will get confused from Wednesday.

I was a bit surprised at today's market. Factors are not fresh, I suppose.

It is EnglishCentral.com. According to the article, you can watch moving images with English and Japanese subtitles. You can check your pronunciation in the site. You can do these things for free.

Nago mayoral election was held today. Susumu Inamine, the opposition candidate to relocation of the US air base, is likely to be elected. So the 2006 bilateral agreement will fall apart, I think.

What will be the market's reaction on Monday? I feel a bit fear.

Justine Henin advanced to the quarter round of Australian Open as I had expected. I'm looking forward to her next match.

Foreign media pulling out of Japan

I read an interesting story "stop the presses---foreign media pulling out of Japan" in The Japan Times yesterday.

According to the article, major foreign media outlets are leaving Japan in droves. The news magazine Time closed its editorial branch in Tokyo earlier this month. Newsweek shut down its editorial section in Tokyo last year. The editorial staff of Business Week merged with Bloomberg after the financial news service announced it would buy the magazine last October. And The New York Times, The Washington Post and Los Angeles Times have been reported to have drastically reduced their forces in Japan.

Why foreign media pulled out of Japan? According to the story, the first big reason is the decrease in ad revenue at home, due partly to the effects of the global financial crisis and partly to consumers increasingly turning to the Internet for news. The second reason is the decrease in Japan's national power. Foreign media are becoming increasingly more interested in China and setting up offices there, while they withdraw from Japan.

The Japanese government is also at fault for not extensively opening up news conferences to foreign reporters, the article said. Press clubs are a long-term problem for foreign journalists. Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama had said he would open up news conferences if his party took power. But only some Cabinet members have taken the initiative to even the playing field.

There is a shocking thing for me in the article. The whole world except Japan has open news conferences. China also has it, although Beijing places other restrictions on the press. I think Japan's press clubs are curious systems. But I don't think Japan is an only country having that.

An interviewee in the article said, "it is already too late to woo the foreign press back to Japan." I think so, too. However, it is important for Japan to increase its appeal and to send more information to the world. It's never too late.

Obama selling!?

US President Barack Obama called for limiting the size and trading activities of financial institutions as a way to reduce risk-trading and prevent another financial crisis on Thursday.

The market knew President Obama will make an announcement on the financial regulation proposals. But anyone didn't think the proposals would prohibit banks from running proprietary trading and sponsoring hedge funds and private equity funds.

It was really shocking proposals. Investors were retreating from higher-yielding assets. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 213.27, or 2.01 percent, to 10,389.88 yesterday.

I had been watching the foreign exchange rate then. I don't understand what happened at first. So I bought the Australian dollar against the yen on dip. And I knew the cause of the crash. I was very surprised and really disappointed. Obama doesn't know the economy and the market. The dollar is selling in Tokyo time. It seems to be said that the dollar selling is Obama selling.

I think Obama's proposals, prohibiting proprietary trading, will not work. It will just collapse the market and the economy. I hope the American Congress will consider the proposals carefully.

The Australian dollar was sold more than I expected. Now, Aussie rebounds to 82.02 yen. I' ll do my best.

Ivanovic loses at the second round of Australian Open

Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters advanced to the third round of Australian Open on Wednesday. And Williams sisters also moved to the third round today.

But my favorite Ana Ivanovic was forced out from the tournament. She was defeated 7-6(8-6), 5-7, 4-6 against world No. 36 Gisela Dulko at the second round on Thursday. I was really disappointed. What's wrong with Ana? Anyway, I believe Ivanovic will be back in full force soon.

Well, Sharapova and Ivanovic were out from the tournament. I cheer Roger Federer and Henin so my prediction will come true.

According to Ivanovic's homepage, she looked comfortable and was always in control of the match. That's nice. I think she will go up against formidable opponents as a result of the draw. I hope she will move into high gear gradually.

Maria Sharapova was defeated against fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-7(4-7), 6-3, 4-6 at the first round of Australian Open on Monday.

"It's just a bad day", Sharapova said. "A bad day's not going to stop me from doing what I love. I'm still going back on the court and work hard and perform. I'll back here on a Saturday of the second week, so you'll watch."

I read her comment in the Australian Open site. I was moved. I'll also work hard to achieve my goals like her.

The favorites for the title are Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin, I think. Dinara Safina will fall short of the title. I hope Maria Sharapova or Ana Ivanovic will win the tournament. And I take notice of Kimiko Date Krumm and Melanie Oudin.

On the men's side, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are the favorites. I expect Andy Murray to give a great performance.

I think the tournament will be very sever at both sides. I hope new stars will appear. But Federer and Henin seemed strong after all.

JAL has been one f of popular companies for students seeking job for many years. It is difficult to get a job with JAL, I suppose. Now, JAL will file for bankruptcy and cut 15,600 jobs, or about 30 percent of its group workforce. I doubt the meaning of popular companies for students seeking job. I think it is important to live in accordance with one's own values.

I have subscribed to The Japan Times since September 2007. It was a bit difficult to me at the beginning. But I had being read it well gradually. I have especially read it with eagerness over the past year. So, I improve my English very much. I can read it like Japanese papers now. Of course, there are a lot of words I don't know. Actually, it is very interesting to read it. I think, however, I will not subscribe it from February. Because its subscription rate, 4,480 yen (about $48.84), is so expensive.

I bought a TIME magazine featuring Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke of the 2009 Person of the Year Christmas Day. I felt it was not difficult. I can take TIME at the neighborhood book store. I will read it from now on. And I think I will use the Internet more.

I'm looking forward to reading TIME and improving my English.

The dollar slid 0.4 percent to 92.66 yen Friday as a surprise drop in jobs disappointed investors.

I had watched the rate last night. The market moved as I expected after the unemployment rate and the nonfarm payrolls were announced. But I couldn't trade USD-JPY due to aim too strictly. I had not made any deal this week after all. Investing is difficult indeed.

I think the market is so much expecting US economy will recover. I will trade next week.

Ana lost at the semi final in Brisbane

My way of thinking is similar to the rich way of thinking. But not quite. Because I don't get results completely.

I have worked for a package delivery company since 2007. It is the season of year-end gift in Japan now. But obviously the number of packages are down this year. Of course, the company has held down employment. After all business seems tough.

I don't feel that business is tough in my daily life. It is same as usual. However, Japan's economy is in recession. I think saving is important. And earning is more important. The most crucial issue of Japanese economy is reduction of potential growth rate, I believe.

I have to work hard. Before that, I have to find the best way.

I knew the word "think big" for the first time in childhood. It is commonly-used in the US. Meanwhile people don't say "think big" very often in Japan. When someone intends to do something new, he is often told that don't do such a stupid thing. I think Japan is a country of insularity indeed.

Matsui is MVP

Hideki Matsui tied a World Series record with six RBIs and the New York Yankees won the 27th World Series championship on Wednesday. Matsui was named the Series MVP. He had done a great job, going 8-for-13 (.615) with three homers and eight RBIs.

Matsui made New Yorkers and Japanese very happy. His performance was really impressive. I think Matsui became one of the legends.

But it is uncertain whether Matsui will play for the Yankees next year. I think he had better belong to a team which he can play as a regular. The Boston Red Sox might be better. It is a bit exciting.

Sharapova wins first title since returning to the court

Maria Sharapova won the Toray Pan Pacific Open on October 3 at Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo. It was her first title since undergoing surgery on her right shoulder a year ago.

I had watched the final on TV. When Jelena Jankovic retired in the first set, Sharapova seemed to regret Jankovic's retire. I thought Sharapova's performance was less than perfect. She was on the way to recovery yet.

Anyway, she won the first title after comeback. I expect her completely recovery next year.

Historic election in Japan

I cast a vote for the Lower House election last Sunday. The results had turned out what I had expected for the first time. A change of power in Japan's politics took place at last.

But it is only a beginning of change, I think. Japan seems to move toward a two-party system. However, they are not the Democratic Party of Japan and the Liberal Democratic Party. I think Japanese politics will head for reorganization in several years.

I hope Japan's politics will be a two-party system based on policy, for example, a small government and a big government. If so, Japan is a real democratic country.

Now, I expect the DPJ to destroy bureaucratism. The DPJ promises to strip the bureaucracy of its powers and control over the nation's purse strings. In my opinion, that is the point to revitalize Japanese politics and society.

Anyway, Japan made a big step.

Looking for the right time to sell the dollar

North Korea would attack Japan if a war erupted as a result of efforts to implement recently strengthened U.N. sanctions against Pyongyang over its second nuclear test, a U.S. scholar said Wednesday.

According to the report, Selig Harrison, Asia program director at the Washington-based Center for International Policy, said North Korea would attack Japan because U.S. bases are in the country.

Nationalistic younger generals with no experience of the outside world are now in a strong position in the North Korean leadership while Kim Jong Il reduces his role in day-to-day management. All North Koreans feel threatened by U.S. nuclear arms deployed near their border. And they would be united if tensions caused by attempts to implement the sanctions should escalate to war. "In the event of another war with North Korea," Harrison also said, "it is Japan that North Korea would attack, in my view, not South Korea."

It is a terrible scenario. A lot of Japanese are frustrated with North Korea. If another war with North Korea happens, Japan may be very aggressive against North Korea.

Japan should step up diplomatic efforts, especially through China channel.

Wimbledon begins Monday

Wimbledon will start on Monday. The last year's final between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer was fantastic. But its repetition seems to be difficult because of Nadal's injury. I expect Federer to win the title and make a new record of number of career Grand Slam titles.

On the women's side, I don't know who will be the champion. Three players have held the number one ranking already this year but two of them have never won a Grand Slam. I introduce things what I do everyday due to learn and enjoy English.

1) I read The Japan Times about two pages, the front page and interesting stories.

2) I listen to the radio on the Internet, mainly the Bloomberg radio.

3) I post a story in this blog.

4) I watch TV drams in English such as "ALF" and "Full House," and English educational programs by NHK educational channel.

5) I read paperbacks. I have been reading "Billionaire who wasn't" recently.

6) I surf English websites. "The Onion" and "Dilbert" are my favorite these days.

7) I use "The New Victory Anchor English-Japanese Dictionary" as a wordbook.

8) I read some books for studying English.

I actually do 1, 2 and 3 everyday. From 4 to 7 are almost everyday. 8 is sometimes.

I feel my English is improving. I think the key of success is to enjoy English. Because it cause to continue learning English.

I want to command English fluently. I will enjoy English more.

Teach English in elementary school

Almost every public elementary school across the nation has voluntarily started teaching English this school year, two years ahead of the scheduled implementation of new curriculum guidelines.

According to the education ministry, 58 percent of public elementary schools plan to hold at least 35 English lessons a year for children in the fifth and sixth grades as recommended in the new guidelines for foreign-language education. One lesson lasts 45 minutes.

As far as I know, these English lessons are consisted of simple conversation, playing games in English and so on. My impression of these lessons is kindergarten-style lessons.

According to the media, many teachers are poorly prepared and have worry about teaching English. I think the hours of teaching English are too short to get the results in the first place.

I think teaching English at elementary school is good. But it has a down side. I am afraid some students will lose interest in English.

Funemployment

I read an interesting story in The Japan Times. It was about "funemployment."

I have read the word "funemployment" for the first time. According to the story, it means the condition of a person who takes advantage of being out of a job to have the time of their life.

Millions of Americans who were laid off are struggling to find work as they face foreclosures and bankruptcy. But some people enjoy the time of unemployment. They don't spend their days poring over job listings. They travel on the cheap for weeks, head back to school or volunteer at the neighborhood soup kitchen. And at least until the bank account dries up, they are content living for today.

It is a happy unemployment life. I think the current recession in the US is not the worst circumstances. Because there are some people who can afford to choice their lifestyle freely such as funemployment.

By the way, I have a job. But I feel I am doing similar things.

Tetris has been so popular for 25 years

I found a story about "Tetris" in The Japan Times.

Tetris, one of the most loved computer game, was created by Alexey Pajitnov in June 1984. He was a 29-year-old mathematician in Moscow. Tetris was very popular from late 1980s to early 1990s.

It brings back memories. I had often played Tetris in amusement arcades then. I was not mad about Tetris because I was busy with work and I was mad about shogi. But Tetris was very fun. When I heard the man created Tetris was Russian, I felt it was strange. Because Russia was not a capitalistic country then.

I visited a Web site introduced in the article and played Tetris. It is really fun. I can't concentrate on my work. Ah!

The day of paper waste

Lost seventeen years, a man wrongfully convicted

Toshikazu Sugaya sentenced to life for the 1990 murder of a 4-year-old girl was freed Thursday from Chiba Prison after 17 years behind bars as prosecutors opted not to challenge a recent DNA test that did not link him with the victim.

There was another false accusation. Why did the court retry the case more early? The DNA test has been improving very much.

Sugaya is 62 years old now. He lost the prime of his life. If I were him, I never forgive the fact. I hope he will live the rest of his life happily.

N. Korea named Kim's third son next leader

Kim Jong Il named his youngest son Kim Jong Un North Korea's next leader according to the report.

North Korea aims to be a nuclear-armed country. It is a very serious problem to Japan. I think Japan must not allow to equip itself with nuclear arms. But I am afraid Japan will be lack of policy about it.

If N. Korea has nuclear weapons, it would bring threats to South Korea, Russia and even China. I think it is the key to solve the problem.
